Hope grows for Jelgava girl Olīvija to receive costly medication after donor support and state involvement
Of the 240,000 euros needed for treatment for young Jelgava resident Olīvija, donors have already contributed 150,000 euros, and the Children's Hospital has begun talks with a US manufacturer. The girl is also entitled to 30,000 euros in state support.
Treatment for young Olīvija from Jelgava, which costs a total of 240,000 euros, has moved significantly closer to becoming reality thanks to strong public generosity — 150,000 euros has already been donated.
With this support secured, the Children's Clinical University Hospital has opened negotiations with a medication manufacturer in the United States to purchase the drug the girl needs.
The state steps in
Olīvija's family is also receiving additional support from the state: the girl is entitled to 30,000 euros through an individual medication compensation scheme.
At the same time, the State Agency of Medicines has been instructed to begin negotiations with the manufacturer regarding the drug's price, as well as to explore the possibility of adding the medication to the state's list of reimbursable drugs in the future. Such a step could mean that families facing similar situations would be able to receive state support without having to organize separate fundraising campaigns.
Olīvija's case illustrates how public solidarity and the involvement of state institutions can come together to help a family access life-saving but extremely expensive medication.
