The Jelgava municipality in Latvia is inviting adult residents to join a civil defence volunteer team. The team would help fellow residents and take part in dealing with the consequences of emergencies in the area. The municipality says the effort matters because the work of emergency services and local authorities alone is not enough in a crisis.

When help may be needed

According to the municipality, volunteers could be needed in various crisis situations, for example when strong winds, floods or heavy rainfall cause damage. The municipality notes that the involvement of residents is important in such conditions.

Ingus Zālītis, chair of the municipal council, stresses that the professional knowledge, experience and practical skills of residents can be valuable in strengthening the team. Members will be able to gain new skills and contacts, but the volunteer work will not be paid.

How to apply

Any resident of Jelgava municipality aged 18 or over who is ready to devote their free time to helping in crisis situations may apply.

The application form is available on the municipality's website. It can also be completed on paper and submitted at the State and Municipal Unified Customer Service Centres or at parish administrations.
