Jelgava Municipality Completes 26 Resident-Proposed Environment Improvement Projects
Under the “We for Our Environment 2026” contest run by Jelgava Municipality in Latvia, 26 projects proposed by residents have been completed with 50,000 euros of municipal funding. The money went to improving courtyards, parks, play areas and recreation sites.

In Jelgava Municipality, in Latvia's Zemgale region, 26 resident-initiated projects have been completed under the local contest “We for Our Environment 2026”. The municipality allocated 50,000 euros to support them, and the funds were used to improve courtyards, parks and recreation areas, upgrade sports facilities and tidy up the surroundings, the Jelgava Municipality administration reported.
This year the contest received 51 project applications, of which an evaluation committee backed 27. The deadline for one project was extended to the end of the year for technical reasons. Some of the initiatives continued work begun in previous years.
Courtyards and tidier surroundings
Residents of apartment buildings put in order roads, pavements, parking areas and waste container sites, and renovated building entrances and courtyards. In Zaļenieki, on Milleru Road, an enclosed waste site with a paved area and a water drainage system was built. In Ozolnieki, at 11 Skolas Street, an enclosed waste collection shelter was built and the adjacent car park improved. In Kalnciems, at 4 Stadiona Street, a car park was expanded.
Sport, play and leisure
In the Tušķi birch grove an obstacle course was restored and extended, a new volleyball court was created in Lielvircava, and a volleyball court at 16 Parka Street in Eleja was renovated. In Līvbērze, next to the open-air stage, an adventure park aerial course was built with three sections, each about ten metres long. In Staļģene, the first two sections of an adventure park obstacle course were built beside the school stadium, and in Kārniņi a balance trail was built for children. At the Vilce disc golf park, drainage was improved, storm-damaged throwing areas were repaired and new run-up paths were laid.
By the Sesava pond a footbridge, a changing cabin and swings were installed, while in Emburga support railings, lighting and mooring equipment for boats and SUP boards were added at the pontoon on the Lielupe river.
Parks and heritage sites
In Bramberģe manor park, walking trails were created and a pond was cleaned, and in Vircava manor park steps were built to reach a harder-to-access part of the park. In Valgunde parish, seven information stands were installed at six culturally and historically significant sites. Two insect houses with benches for observing them were set up in Vilce Nature Park.
Jelgava Municipality has organised the “We for Our Environment” contest since 2015.
