Jelgava municipality to build new sports hall for Eleja secondary school for nearly €4 million
Jelgava municipality has launched construction of a new sports hall for Eleja secondary school worth almost four million euros, with completion planned for summer 2028.
The Jelgava municipality has started a project to build a new sports hall for Eleja secondary school, the municipality told the LETA news agency.
The new building, with a total area of nearly 1,000 square metres, will be connected to the school's existing three-storey building via a passage on the ground floor. It will house a full sports hall suitable for both physical education classes and team sports competitions, as well as a gym with impact-resistant rubber flooring, mirrored walls, running tracks, exercise bikes and boxing bag mounts.
Infrastructure and accessibility
The building will get its own independent utility network with energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems, along with rebuilt underground water pipes and a renewed rainwater collection system. The facility will be fully accessible for people with mobility impairments, including gently sloped ramps and a specially equipped toilet. Up to 200 people will be able to use the hall at once, with retractable bleachers adding another 150 seats.
The project also includes landscaping of the surrounding area. Next to the existing stadium, a fenced sports field with artificial turf, football goals and lighting will be built, along with a recreation area with benches and interactive elements. Access roads, parking spaces, two bicycle shelters and 36 bicycle racks are also planned.
Jelgava municipal council chairman Ingus Zālītis (ZZS) said the project has long been awaited by residents of Eleja, Lielplatone, Vilce, Sesava and Platone, noting that a positive outcome was finally reached after several unsuccessful procurement attempts. He added that the new facility will also be open to other municipality residents for recreation and physical activity in the evenings and on weekends.
While unforeseen circumstances could still affect such a large project, the municipality hopes the new sports hall in Eleja will open its doors in the summer of 2028. Design, construction and construction supervision will be carried out by SIA "Bildberg" under a contract worth €3,956,700. The company was founded in 2006, is solely owned by Gatis Bērziņš, and reported a turnover of €17.6 million in 2025.
