After the storm, Vircava's wastewater treatment plant in Jelgava municipality still on emergency mode

Jelgava municipality says that most of the storm-related problems still affecting the area stem from power outages, which in turn are disrupting water supply, wastewater and mobile communication systems.

Power supply not yet fully restored

Grid operator AS "Sadales tīkls" is continuing repairs to power infrastructure damaged during the storm. About 250 sites in Jelgava municipality remain without electricity. The municipality stresses that restoring power is a priority, since other critical services depend on it.

Water supply mostly restored, Vircava plant still on emergency mode

According to SIA "Jelgavas novada KU", the storm caused disruptions at roughly 80% of water supply infrastructure sites, but centralized water supply and sewage pumping systems are now functioning across all parishes of the municipality. Wastewater treatment plants have also mostly resumed normal operation, except in Vircava, where the plant is still running in emergency mode due to the power outage. Responsible services are working to restore full functionality there.

Mobile network issues persist

Mobile communications were disrupted across much of Latvia during and after the storm, and Jelgava municipality has received reports from residents about connectivity problems. The municipality says it has already discussed the resilience of mobile networks during emergencies with relevant ministries and operators.

Municipal officials say state and local government services continue working in an intensified mode to fix the damage, and promise to keep residents updated on major developments.

As previously reported, on August 22 Latvia was hit by the strongest summer storm in recent decades, with wind gusts locally exceeding 30 meters per second, leaving about 277,000 customers nationwide without power. AS "Sadales tīkls" plans to fully restore electricity supply by August 28.
