Jelgava Municipality Plans to Compensate Teachers' Travel Costs
Jelgava County has drafted regulations to reimburse teachers for commuting expenses, aiming to attract and retain educators, especially in remote schools.

The Jelgava County Council has prepared a draft binding regulation that could ease teachers' daily travel. It proposes to compensate expenses for commuting between home and school.
Under the plan, teachers whose residence is more than 10 kilometers from the school would be eligible. For public transport, the compensation would be 100% of actual costs, up to €100 per month. If public transport is unavailable or does not ensure timely arrival and return, 70% of personal car expenses would be reimbursed, also capped at €100 per month.
The municipality hopes this move will help attract and retain teachers, especially in schools located farther from urban centers. The draft is now open for public consultation until August 6, after which it is expected to be adopted.
