Jelgava school principal disciplined over centralized exam irregularities

Exam violations

The State Education Development Agency (VIAA) has identified violations in a centralized mathematics exam taken by 9th graders at a school in Jelgava. Several exam papers contained handwriting that did not match the students'. The agency's assessment concluded that a person unrelated to the exam had gained access to the papers during the test and arbitrarily added solution entries.

The procedural commission set up by the agency decided that the affected students should receive marks only for the tasks they had completed themselves. VIAA also asked the State Police to assess whether a criminal offense had occurred, but no criminal proceedings were opened. Police said the elements of a criminal offense were not present.

Principal's responsibility

The State Education Quality Service said the Jelgava municipality had imposed a disciplinary sanction on the school's director in connection with the violations in the state examination. Neither VIAA nor police disclosed the school's name. Police confirmed that no criminal case had been initiated.
