Yemeni forces say they repelled Houthi attack in Taiz

Yemeni government forces have announced that they repelled an attack by Houthi fighters in Taiz province, in the southwest of the country. The report comes amid days of escalating military tension across Yemen.

The escalation followed an announcement by the Yemeni government that it had launched attacks on positions held by the Houthi movement. Since then, both sides have reported continued fighting.

Taiz province has long been a frontline in the conflict between the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which controls large parts of northern Yemen including the capital Sanaa, and the internationally recognised Yemeni government based in the south.

The war in Yemen has continued for more than a decade, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. In recent years, the Houthis have also become known for attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, which they link to support for Palestinians.
