New York Jets player Stiggers was hospitalised after suffering a medical emergency during a joint practice session with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, BBC Sport reports.
As medical staff attended to him on the field, several Jets players took a knee near the sidelines while others formed a prayer circle. Running back Breece Hall described the moment as very sad and emotional, saying team-mates prayed for Stiggers and hoped he would be okay.
Jets head coach Glenn praised the team's medical staff for how they handled the situation and said he intended to visit Stiggers in hospital.
Tense practice session
The joint session reportedly included several skirmishes between the two teams, including one involving Stiggers and a Buccaneers player during which Stiggers' helmet was thrown down the field.
Stiggers has appeared in 29 games for the Jets, recording 35 tackles, two fumble recoveries and three passes defended.
The Jets are scheduled to host the Buccaneers in their NFL pre-season opener at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday at 00:00 BST (Saturday). BBC Sport has contacted the New York Jets for comment.
