John Deere 8R 540: Most Powerful Model in New 8R Series Delivers Up to 594 hp
The flagship of John Deere's new 8R tractor series, the 8R 540, produces up to 594 horsepower, or about 634 hp with an optional boost system. Polish farming outlet topagrar.pl reviewed its technical features and cab equipment.
Polish agricultural portal topagrar.pl has described the John Deere 8R 540, the most powerful model in the new 8R series from the US manufacturer John Deere, following a field demonstration. The series also includes the 8R 490 and 8R 440. For farmers, the tractor is relevant as high-output equipment for heavy field and transport work.
Engine and power transfer
The tractor is driven by a six-cylinder, 13.6-litre engine with a maximum output of 594 horsepower. An optional Peak Power IPM system adds another 40 hp when the engine reaches peak power demand, giving roughly 634 hp in total. The standard IPM system also provides an extra 40 hp, but operates at the engine's rated speed. Torque reaches nearly 2,700 Nm, about 1,000 Nm more than the 8R 410 model.
Power reaches the ground through 900/46 tyres at the rear and 710/38 at the front. Tyre pressure is managed by the CTIS central inflation system: it can be lowered for field work to reduce soil compaction and raised for road transport. The demonstration used 1 bar in the rear tyres and about 1.2 bar in the front. The presented configuration weighs around 22.5 tonnes, and the maximum is about 23.7 tonnes.
Transmission, hydraulics and lifting
The eAutoPowr transmission can be specified for a top speed of 40, 50 or 60 km/h. The 60 km/h version is sold in Poland, but national rules limit tractors to 40 km/h on public roads. The permitted gross combination weight is 20 tonnes with the 60 km/h gearbox and 24 tonnes with the 40 km/h one.
There are three hydraulic configurations delivering 210, 320 or 420 l/min; the demonstrated tractor had two large pumps. The rear category 4 linkage lifts about 10.9 tonnes, while the front one lifts up to about 7 tonnes. The rear category 5 hitch is designed for vertical loads of up to 8 tonnes.
Cab
The operator's seat can swivel up to 40 degrees to the right, the doors close electrically, and the tractor starts with a button and a personal PIN code. It has a CommandArm armrest with a fifth-generation display and a CommandX Pro joystick with 12 configurable buttons. The seat offers massage and ventilation functions, and up to three operator profiles can be saved.
