The 30th anniversary edition of Estonia's Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) will present 230 feature-length and 259 short films from 87 countries. Organisers said on Friday that this is the largest number of countries in the festival's history.

The event opens on 6 November and runs until 22 November. Over two and a half weeks, 834 screenings will take place in Tallinn, the Estonian capital, and in Tartu. The programme includes 107 world premieres and 47 international premieres.

Oscar and European Film Academy contenders

Thirteen films in the programme have been submitted for the Oscar in the best international film category. Another 15 have made the longlist of contenders for the European Film Academy award.

Baltic states as the main theme

This year's central theme is the Baltic states. A special programme will show about 40 films, from classics to the newest works. The opening film, "Ula", is also a co-production of the three Baltic countries, with Latvia in the leading role.

More information is available on the festival's website.
