Sea water warmest along Vidzeme coast on Friday – locally up to 21°C
On Friday morning, the warmest sea water in Latvia is along the Vidzeme coast, reaching about 21°C, while in Kolka it is 17°C. Swimming in the open sea is not recommended due to large waves and currents.
Sea water temperatures along the Latvian coast vary considerably on Friday morning, from 17°C at Kolka to approximately 21°C on the Vidzeme coast, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre. The warmest water is found along the Vidzeme coast and in some places in the Gulf of Riga.
On the Kurzeme coast, temperatures are between 17°C and 19°C in both the open sea and the Gulf of Riga. At the western mole of Daugavgrīva, in Skulte port and Salacgrīva port, the water is about 21°C. These locations stand out as the warmest.
Municipal data show that at official bathing sites in Liepāja, Ventspils, Jūrmala, Rīga and Saulkrasti, the sea water temperature on Thursday was between 18°C and 20°C.
Bathers should be cautious. Swimming in the open sea is not recommended due to large waves and currents. Caution is also advised in the Gulf of Riga. Lifeguard services may raise a red flag, meaning swimming is prohibited. Because of the westerly wind, water temperatures may drop sharply on the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga and in Jūrmala.
Inland waters are also warm. In major rivers and lakes, the temperature on Friday morning ranges from 19°C to 24°C. The highest reading, 24°C, was recorded in the Daugava River.
