Jūrmala residents to be allowed to buy fallen and damaged trees from municipal forests for firewood
The Jūrmala City Council has approved a procedure allowing residents registered in Jūrmala to purchase up to 10 cubic metres of fallen or damaged trees from municipal forest land for heating.
At a meeting on 30 July, Jūrmala City Council deputies approved binding regulations on how fallen, dangerous or damaged trees are to be collected on municipal forest land. The regulations give people who are registered as residents of Jūrmala the right to buy such trees for their own firewood needs.
One resident may purchase up to ten cubic metres of wood per year. The measure is intended to make firewood more accessible while also helping to clear wind- and snow-damaged, dry, or otherwise affected trees from municipal forests.
To make a purchase, residents must submit an application to the Jūrmala State City Administration. The application will be reviewed by the Forestry Division of the Property Administration, which will measure the trees, determine their volume in cubic metres and calculate the sale price. After the payment is made, the division will issue a permit for cutting and collecting the wood.
The price depends on the tree species. Hard broadleaved trees such as oak, ash and maple will cost €18 per cubic metre; conifers such as pine and spruce €17; birch and black alder €16; and other broadleaved trees €15. All prices are quoted excluding value added tax, which will be applied in accordance with regulations.
The regulations will take effect once published in the official journal Latvijas Vēstnesis.
