Jūrmala water utility SIA Jūrmalas ūdens has received €8 million to reconstruct the Jūrmala–Rīga sewage pressure pipeline. Construction is planned to begin in mid-2027 and finish by mid-2029.

Jūrmala's water utility SIA Jūrmalas ūdens has received €8 million to reconstruct the Jūrmala–Rīga municipal sewage pressure pipeline. The pipeline carries wastewater from Jūrmala and from Spilve village in Mārupe municipality to Riga's wastewater treatment system, so its safe and uninterrupted operation is important for the region's water management.
What the project involves
The project provides for reconstructing 11 kilometres of the existing pipeline. A construction design will also be prepared for a second pipeline line, which is planned to be built in the future. Wastewater from Babīte–Piņķi will also be able to connect to the pipeline.
The aim is to improve the safety and reliability of the system and to reduce environmental risks.
Contractor and timeline
The design and construction work will be carried out by SIA Binders, a company selected through an open tender. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2027 and be completed by mid-2029.
Comments
Elmārs Prikšāns, head of the Latvian branch of OP Corporate Bank plc, said that safe and reliable water infrastructure matters both for residents' quality of life and for protecting the environment. He stressed that such investments help reduce potential environmental risks and keep an important public service running without interruption.
Raimonds Arājs, chairman of the management board of SIA Jūrmalas ūdens, explained that the reconstruction is part of a long-term investment plan to gradually renew and modernise Jūrmala's water infrastructure. In his words, maintaining worn-out infrastructure requires disproportionately high costs, and repairs alone are not enough to ensure it works in the long term. The company is therefore investing in rebuilding the existing pipeline and designing a second line, in order to serve residents and businesses in Jūrmala and Mārupe municipality and to prepare for expanding system capacity in line with future needs.
