The Maritime Profession: A Pillar of Latvia's Economy and a Future Career Choice
The maritime sector is a key pillar of Latvia's economy, with seafarers contributing an estimated €450–500 million annually. The RTU Latvian Maritime Academy trains specialists who are in demand both at sea and on shore.
Maritime transport is one of the fundamental sectors of the global economy, handling about 90% of all cargo. For Latvia, this industry is especially significant, with seafarers contributing an estimated €450–500 million to the national economy each year. Recent incidents, such as the grounding of the "Ever Given" in the Suez Canal and traffic restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, highlight the critical role of maritime transport in global supply chains.
The growing number of ships worldwide has increased demand for highly skilled seafarers, including ship officers, marine engineers, and electro-automation engineers. A global shortage of such professionals exists. Latvian seafarers trained at the RTU Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) are highly valued in the international labor market.
Thanks to funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, LMA has modernized its training infrastructure. Students have access to ship bridge and engine room simulators, laboratories, and other equipment that replicate real working conditions. Modern ships are highly digitalized, requiring knowledge in automation, cybersecurity, and electronics—skills that also make graduates competitive in other technology sectors.
Close cooperation with shipping companies provides students with internship opportunities, covering living expenses, meals, and transport. Most graduates find employment in their field after studies. Many seafarers work for international companies but spend their income in Latvia, boosting the local economy.
A career as a seafarer is not limited to working on ships. Graduates can work in ports, logistics companies, ship repair and construction, government agencies, and other industries. Particularly broad opportunities exist for marine engineers and electro-automation engineers. Career advancement is possible up to senior engineer or captain positions.
Today, Latvia needs highly qualified maritime professionals. Young people should consider the maritime profession as a promising career option that offers challenges, the opportunity to see the world, and a stable future.
