Hidden waterfall and stone wall discovered along Old Route 5 in Cape Breton
A little-known spot in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, features a waterfall flowing through an old stone wall in a steep, mossy canyon just off the road.
Along the old Route 5 road in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, lies a lesser-known natural spot that some describe as a hidden gem. There, a waterfall flows through an old stone wall and tumbles over moss-covered rocks in a steep canyon lined with birch trees.
Inside the canyon, the waterfall meets two additional creeks, with the combined waters eventually disappearing into a large culvert at the base of the canyon. Visitors note the site is especially worth seeing after rain, when more water flows through the falls, and that the rain itself adds to the atmosphere of the place.
No hiking is required to reach the spot, as it sits right beside the road. Walking around the rim of the canyon is easy, but the best photo opportunities come from descending into the canyon itself. Those who choose to go down are warned that the slope is very steep and muddy, requiring caution.
