How to safely dispose of your old TV

A television is too large, awkward and often hazardous to simply throw away with regular household trash. Before deciding what to do with an old set, it helps to assess its condition and age, and to check local rules for handling electronic waste.

Testing and clearing your data

If the TV still works, start by checking that it powers on, the remote buttons function, and the picture and sound are acceptable. For smart TVs, it's essential to sign out of streaming apps like Netflix and perform a factory reset before passing the device on, since it may retain Wi-Fi credentials and viewing history. If physical access isn't possible, many streaming services allow remote sign-out from specific devices. It's also worth checking that no streaming sticks or USB drives have been left plugged into the ports.

Finding a new home for a working set

A TV that still functions can be offered to friends, family or neighbors, or listed on platforms such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Sellers should be upfront about any flaws, such as scratches or dead pixels. An outdated smart TV's software limitations can often be solved by pairing it with a streaming device like Apple TV, Roku or Chromecast rather than replacing the whole set. Charities and thrift stores may also accept working televisions, though older CRT models are generally refused due to the hazardous materials they contain.

Recycling and safe transport

If no one wants the TV, it should be taken for proper recycling rather than discarded, since TVs can contain lead and mercury that pose risks to health and the environment. Local waste management facilities, pickup services, retailers and some manufacturers offer recycling or take-back options. When moving a flat-screen TV, it should stay upright to avoid damaging the panel, while heavy and fragile CRT sets require careful handling, ideally with two people, to prevent breaking the glass.
