How to safely clean a PlayStation 5 console of dust
Cleaning a PlayStation 5 console takes only a soft cloth, a vacuum and cotton swabs. Sony advises against alcohol and against opening the internals, since its warranty excludes damage from unauthorized opening.
Owners of Sony's PlayStation 5 gaming console should clean the device of dust from time to time, because built-up dust restricts airflow and makes the console work harder to cool itself. The technology site Engadget has put together guidance on doing this without damaging the hardware, noting that overzealous cleaning can be as harmful as neglect.
Preparation and exterior cleaning
The console should be shut down, all cables unplugged and the unit left to cool before it is placed on a clean, flat surface. The outer surfaces are wiped with a clean, soft cloth, as Sony's safety guide advises. Bleach and chemically treated cloths should not be used.
Sony specifically recommends against alcohol, which may discolor the system or degrade its materials. The console's parts are made of ABS plastic, polycarbonate and a blend of the two called PC-ABS, and each has its own chemical vulnerabilities. The vents can be cleaned with a small handheld vacuum rather than a heavy-duty industrial one. A cotton swab picks up dust the vacuum misses, and a soft brush, such as an old toothbrush, helps remove caked-on dirt.
Removing the covers
The covers are designed to come off but are fairly flimsy, so they should be removed slowly. The method differs between the original PS5 and the Slim and Pro models, and Sony provides instructions. With the covers off, accessible dust can be collected with the cloth and handheld vacuum. There is no need to disconnect the fan or remove internal screws.
When using canned air, avoid spinning the fan, which can generate an electric charge that damages the system. A cotton swab can be used to block the fan blades first. The triangular dust catchers, which Sony designed to collect debris, should also be checked. Going deeper is possible, but Sony's warranty excludes damage caused by unauthorized opening or work inside the console. Removing the fan screws requires a TR8 Torx Security screwdriver.
Afterward, the covers must be reattached and aligned correctly, as improper connection could affect airflow and potentially shorten the console's life.
Console placement
The console can be used vertically or horizontally, but always with its stand. The original PS5 includes an adjustable base, while the PS5 Slim and Pro come only with a horizontal stand; a vertical stand costs $30 separately. There should be at least four inches of space between the console and walls, preferably with nothing overhead, and it should not be placed in a cramped space such as an entertainment center.
