How to Choose a Battery-Powered Leaf Blower: What Matters and What Doesn't

In its roundup of battery-powered leaf blowers tested for power, battery life and noise, tech publication Wired explains which specs matter when buying, such as voltage, capacity and battery platform, and which are overrated.

US technology publication Wired has published buying advice as part of its 2026 test of battery-powered leaf blowers, which assessed power, battery life and noise. The guidance helps shoppers work out which technical specifications actually affect everyday use, since manufacturer marketing often highlights other figures.

What to focus on

Voltage. Leaf blower batteries range from 18 to 80 volts. Part of the difference is marketing: an advertised 20-volt battery delivers essentially the same power as an 18-volt one, and the same applies to 36- and 40-volt options. Unless a buyer wants one battery for every tool, a blower with at least a 36-volt battery is usually the better choice. Simpler 18- or 20-volt models suit small jobs such as clearing a patio, cleaning a garage or drying a car.

Amp-hours. This rating indicates runtime. The author likens voltage to a car's engine and amp-hours to the size of the gas tank. Kits typically come with 4 to 8 amp-hour batteries. Higher-capacity batteries cost more, weigh more and take longer to charge.

Platform. Anyone who already owns one brand's outdoor power equipment is advised to buy the blower as a bare tool and reuse existing batteries. For newcomers, the range of tools sharing the same battery is important.

Detent clasps and stubby nozzle. Spring-loaded detent clips hold connections more securely than friction fits. For car detailing, some blowers add a stubby 3- to 6-inch tube, though it reduces air velocity.

What to worry about less

Weight: a good battery blower weighs about 10.5 pounds (roughly 4.8 kg) with the battery attached. CFM and MPH: there is no universal test method for battery-powered blowers, so brands measure differently. Newtons are the best like-for-like measure of blowing power, with a good midrange model producing around 20 newtons, but they too are only a guide. Wide nozzles are also not a deciding factor.
