Choosing a tumble dryer: key factors to consider

An industry expert explains the main differences between condenser and heat pump tumble dryers, along with how to pick the right capacity for your laundry needs.

Many households eventually reach a point where a traditional clothes drying rack becomes impractical — it takes up space, affects indoor air quality, and rarely stays empty for long. Buying a tumble dryer seems like the obvious solution, but the wide range of brands, features and prices on the market can make the choice confusing.

Two main technologies

According to a specialist from RD Electronics, the first thing to consider is the drying technology itself. A standard condenser dryer heats air to as much as 70-80 degrees Celsius and cools it using ambient room air. This type has notable downsides: it can heat up the room, consumes two to three times more energy, and may damage delicate fabrics.

A heat pump dryer works differently, operating as a closed system where heat is recirculated rather than wasted. This design can cut electricity use by 60-70% compared to a condenser model. Heat pump dryers also operate at a lower, gentler temperature of around 50-55 degrees, which helps protect clothes from shrinking. The main trade-off is a longer drying cycle, though this is offset by the energy savings and gentler treatment of fabrics.

Matching capacity to your washing machine

Capacity is another key consideration. The specialist recommends choosing a dryer with the same capacity as your washing machine, or slightly larger — standard sizes range from 7 to 9 kilograms. An overloaded dryer will not only wrinkle clothes but also take longer to finish drying.

Ultimately, buyers should weigh the higher upfront cost of heat pump models against long-term electricity savings and gentler fabric care when making their decision.
