How Kane and Haaland compare – who would you pick?
Ahead of the World Cup quarter-final, BBC Sport compares Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, analyzing their goal-scoring, all-round play, and expert opinions.

Introduction
From the moment Harry Kane's proposed move to Manchester City fell through in August 2021, his career has been linked with Erling Haaland. The Norwegian arrived the next summer and fired City to a Treble. At that time, Kane, as Tottenham captain, had no trophies. Fast forward to 2026, after moving to Bayern Munich in 2023, he has won two Bundesliga titles and the European Golden Shoe. At this World Cup, Kane has six goals, Haaland seven. Both are central to their countries' hopes in the quarter-final.
Goals as the key metric
Any comparison starts with goals. Kane has scored 85 times for England since his debut in March 2015, becoming the driving force for the national team. He scored twice against DR Congo and a penalty against Mexico. Since moving to Germany, his numbers have surpassed Haaland's each season. Haaland has scored the match-winner in all four World Cup games he played, including two against Brazil. His Norway record is astonishing: 62 goals in 51 matches, a rate of one goal every 71 minutes.
More than just goals
While both are supreme scorers, Kane offers more in all-round play. He has one assist at this tournament, while Haaland has created more chances (six vs four) in fewer minutes. At club level, Kane averages nearly double the touches per game, creates twice as many chances, and completes two dribbles per match compared to Haaland's one. Touch maps show Haaland concentrated in the penalty area, while Kane is involved across the pitch. When Haaland does not score, Norway's win rate drops dramatically (under a third), whereas England cope better without Kane's goals thanks to support from Jude Bellingham.
Expert opinions
Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart called Haaland "an absolute monster," noting his calmness and enjoyment of the World Cup. Wayne Rooney said Haaland has given Norway belief they can go far. Of Kane's winner against DR Congo, Rooney said: "It's sublime. Like all great centre-forwards, he doesn't even have to look at the goalkeeper – it's instinctive." Hart added: "He trusts his technique and from the moment the ball left his foot, he would have been celebrating."
Head-to-head
Kane and Haaland have faced each other only twice, both in early 2023. Haaland scored the equaliser as City came from 2-0 down to win 4-2. Kane got revenge with the only goal in a 1-0 victory, becoming Spurs' all-time leading scorer. Now the stakes are even higher with a World Cup semi-final place on the line.
