Before resetting your MacBook, check these settings for the real slowdown culprit

Apple recommends checking storage, memory pressure and background apps before turning to a factory reset or third-party cleanup tool when a MacBook slows down.

A sluggish MacBook doesn't necessarily call for a factory reset, a paid optimization tool or a new machine. According to Apple, common culprits include low storage space, heavy memory use and incompatible software. The recommended first step is identifying what's actually straining the system before attempting any fix.

If the slowdown is recent, simply restarting the Mac and using it normally for a while can reveal whether the issue persists. If a specific app triggers the slowdown afterward, that narrows down where to look next.

Storage and memory checks

The Storage section under General in System Settings shows what's consuming disk space along with built-in cleanup suggestions; freeing up space or moving files to external storage can help if the disk is nearly full.

Activity Monitor, easily opened through Spotlight search, reveals which apps and processes are using the most processor capacity while the slowdown occurs. An app that repeatedly tops the CPU list is worth quitting and reopening, or trimming down, such as by closing extra browser tabs. The Memory tab's Memory Pressure graph is more informative than checking free RAM alone — green indicates efficient use, while yellow or red signals strain that may warrant closing a memory-heavy app.

Background activity and power settings

Apps set to open automatically at login, found under Login Items & Extensions, can be removed if they aren't needed every session. The same settings page lists background activity permissions; apps no longer used can be uninstalled, though tools relied on for syncing or ongoing background tasks should stay enabled.

Checking the Battery settings' Power Mode is also worthwhile — Low Power mode extends battery life but can reduce performance, so switching back to Automatic may help when speed matters more. Keeping macOS updated to the latest compatible version is also advisable, since Apple lists incompatible software among possible slowdown causes.

If none of these steps clarify the problem, deeper troubleshooting options include booting into safe mode to check startup software, or running Disk Utility's First Aid tool to check for disk errors. Both are meant for diagnosing specific issues rather than routine maintenance.
