How to fix stick drift on PS5 and Xbox controllers

Stick drift — when a controller's analog stick registers movement without any player input, causing the in-game camera or character to shift on its own — remains a persistent issue for both PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controllers. Neither device uses Hall Effect thumbstick technology, which is known to reduce the problem.

Start with cleaning

Dust, grime and sweat buildup can interfere with a controller's internal sensors. Recommended fixes include using short bursts of compressed air around the sticks, or gently applying a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol. Controllers should always be powered off before cleaning.

Resetting and firmware updates

The DualSense has a small reset pinhole on its rear that can be pressed with a paperclip for at least five seconds, after which the controller can be reconnected to the PS5 via USB. If cleaning and resetting don't help, checking for and installing a firmware update through the console's accessory settings is another option. Xbox owners can also use the free Xbox Accessories app, which includes calibration tools for adjusting stick dead zones.

A pricier fix

Owners of Sony's premium $200 DualSense Edge controller have the option of buying a replacement stick module for $30, though the module isn't included with the controller itself. Swapping it in involves releasing a latch, removing the plate around the stick, and sliding the old module out before inserting the new one.

Why it happens

The most common cause of stick drift is simple wear and tear, as the potentiometers that track stick position degrade with heavy use. Accidental damage and moisture exposure can also trigger the fault, and in some cases even brand-new controllers arrive with drift due to manufacturing defects. Anyone still under warranty is advised to contact Sony or Microsoft for repair or replacement rather than attempting to open the controller themselves.
