How to Properly Clean Birkenstock Sandals Without Damaging Them
To make Birkenstock sandals last longer, clean them gently according to the material, and avoid prolonged moisture and high temperatures.

Cleaning Frequency and Basics
Regular care helps maintain both appearance and comfort. For daily wear, clean every two weeks, but more often in heat or after dusty environments. Pay most attention to the footbed, straps, and sole where sweat and dirt accumulate.
Footbed Care
The footbed is a key part, so clean it gently. Mix a small amount of water with leather shampoo, use a toothbrush to lightly clean the footbed without excessive scrubbing. Then wipe off soap residue with a damp microfiber cloth. Never soak sandals in water or let the cork footbed get fully wet. Dry at room temperature away from direct sun and heat sources.
Sole Cleaning
Clean the outsole with a damp cloth or brush. For dirt in grooves, use a stiffer brush. Afterwards, wipe away any soap residue and let dry.
Strap Cleaning by Material
For nubuck and suede, first use a stiff brush to remove dust, then gently clean with a slightly damp brush. For smooth and natural leather, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth; clean buckles with a damp brush. Patent leather only needs a wipe with a damp cloth. EVA sandals are easiest—wipe with a soapy cloth, rinse, and let dry, but do not machine wash or tumble dry.
For Longer Life
Avoid prolonged water exposure as the cork footbed and adhesives are not waterproof. Regularly air out the footbed to prevent odors and bacteria. After wet conditions, wipe metal buckles to reduce corrosion. Avoid prolonged heat—direct sun and radiators can damage leather and cork. Use appropriate care products: neutral shoe cream for metallic leather, colorless leather conditioner for natural/oiled leather, impregnating spray for nubuck and suede, and leather care product for smooth leather.
