How to force quit unresponsive apps on Windows
Windows offers several ways to shut down a frozen program, ranging from the Task Manager to custom keyboard shortcuts, even though the platform doesn't call it "force quit."
Windows doesn't have a single feature labeled "force quit" the way macOS does, but several tools accomplish the same result: terminating a program regardless of whether it responds.
Closing apps normally
The standard way to close most programs is clicking the X in the top-right corner of the window, or using the Alt + F4 shortcut. Both send a normal close request, giving the app a chance to finish tasks first — for example, prompting you to save changes in a document. Some background-oriented apps, such as Discord or Spotify, don't fully quit this way and instead minimize to the system tray.
Using Task Manager
When a program freezes and ignores normal close requests, the Task Manager becomes the go-to tool. It opens with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or by right-clicking an empty area of the taskbar. Under the Processes tab, users can locate the stuck app, select it, and click End Task to forcefully terminate it — though this discards any unsaved work. The Windows Explorer process deserves special caution, since it manages the taskbar and other visual elements; Task Manager offers a Restart option for it instead of a plain end command.
Additional options
Within Settings, under System > Advanced, users can enable an "End Task" toggle that adds a force-close option directly to the taskbar's right-click menu, skipping Task Manager entirely. For especially stubborn processes, the Details tab in Task Manager includes an "End process tree" command that also terminates related processes. More advanced users can build a desktop shortcut running a command that automatically kills any unresponsive app, or install third-party tools that add dedicated force-quit keyboard shortcuts. If none of these work, restarting the computer will resolve the issue.
