How to Prepare and Act During a Storm-Related Power Outage

Strong storms often cause temporary power outages. Simple preparation and calm actions can help manage the inconvenience, especially when children or food storage are involved.

Thunderstorms can lead to power cuts, which are usually not dangerous but can be stressful. To stay in control, it is advisable to charge your phone and prepare a flashlight or headlamp beforehand, rather than relying on your phone's light. A fully charged power bank is also helpful. Check the location of your fuse box in advance so you can quickly turn breakers off or on if needed.

When the power goes out, stay calm. First, check if neighbors also have a blackout – this indicates whether it's a local or wider issue. Turn off appliances like stoves or irons to avoid risks when power returns. Use a flashlight instead of candles, especially in homes with children. Avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer unnecessarily to preserve cold.

If the outage lasts more than a few hours, limit fridge openings even more – a closed refrigerator can keep food cold for up to four hours. Use your phone sparingly by activating power-saving mode. Gather the family in one room to reduce lighting needs and retain warmth. Avoid moving around dark rooms to prevent injuries.

To report faults, contact the relevant distribution operator. In Latvia, it is AS "Sadales tīkls" – check their website or call their customer center. Restoration forecasts may be available online or via a mobile app.
