More and more people are facing the need to combine education with everyday responsibilities. Some start working while still at school; others, already in adulthood, decide to return to studies to finish high school and obtain the certificate they missed. Balancing both can be a serious test, so it is important to understand how to make the process successful and less stressful.

Traditional classroom schooling requires physical presence every working day morning and afternoon. When shift work or a full-time job is added, maintaining such a routine over time becomes nearly impossible. A flexible study schedule offers a way out: it allows learning when the mind is freshest. Researchers at Stanford University have found that people with full control over their study time and environment show 20–25% higher work efficiency than those who must fit into rigid frameworks. Time autonomy also significantly reduces the risk of chronic stress and burnout.

Comparing classroom and distance learning shows clear differences. A fixed timetable is hard to coordinate with work shifts, while distance learning is fully adaptable – mornings, evenings or weekends. There is no need to spend time commuting, as studies can be done from home, office or anywhere else. Each student can learn at their own pace and spend more time on difficult topics instead of following the average speed of the class. Digital materials and interactive e-environment are available 24/7, and online consultations can be watched again if something is unclear.

Practical advice can help keep work and study separate. First, create a calendar and enter work shifts and school deadlines first. Seeing the full picture helps avoid situations where an important assignment is due tomorrow but a late shift is scheduled today. Large tasks can be broken into smaller pieces – if there is no time for three straight hours, use 30-minute windows, for example during lunch or on public transport. It is also important not to stay alone with difficulties; distance learners should use the support of teachers and mentors.

Distance learning does not mean lower standards. With well-designed materials, structured e-environment, consultations and regular teacher support, results can be higher. An example is the distance education high school Rīgas Komercskola, which has been the best distance learning school in Latvia by centralised exam results every year since 2017. Its methodology and mentoring system allow each student to learn at their own pace while staying connected to teachers, making distance education a reliable bridge to full secondary education and a successful career.
