How to easily set up your Sonos speakers using the app

The Sonos app, once criticized for bugs, now works far more reliably, making it straightforward to add a new speaker regardless of model — from the older Sonos One to top-tier Dolby Atmos speakers, the setup process is largely the same.

First-time setup

Start by downloading the Sonos app from the App Store or Google Play, creating an account, and making sure the speaker and your device are on the same Wi-Fi network. In the app, choose to start a new system, add the speaker, and it should automatically detect the hardware and guide you through connecting it to Wi-Fi — have your router password ready. The speaker can be assigned one of over 20 preset room names or a custom one. Additional speakers can be added via the settings menu, though surround speakers for a full home theater setup generally need to be the same model. The app also allows pairing voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa.

Fixing connection issues

The most common reason the app fails to find a speaker is a network problem — both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network. A recently changed router password or an active VPN can also interfere, as can outdated software. If the speaker still isn't found, unplugging it, waiting at least ten seconds, and reconnecting it often helps. If a "no products found" error persists, a factory reset is the last resort, which erases saved sound settings — done by holding the Bluetooth button until the light flashes green.

Improving sound quality

For home theater setups, the TruePlay feature is useful, using the phone's microphone to analyze room acoustics and adjust sound based on furniture placement. EQ settings can also be adjusted — bass, treble, and subwoofer output — using sliders ranging from -15 to +15. It's recommended not to set the subwoofer above +5 to avoid disturbing neighbors.
