Five situations where a regular vacuum cleaner isn't enough

A household vacuum cleaner is designed for a fairly specific task: collecting dry dust, crumbs, hair and other small debris from floors and furniture. But its capabilities run out once dirt becomes wet, heavy or abrasive.

When problems appear more often

One common situation is water on the floor — a spilled bucket, a leak from a washing machine connection, water in the basement after rain, or moisture in the bathroom. In these cases, wet-and-dry vacuum cleaners are useful; household models typically have tank capacities of roughly 12 to 30 litres. Before use, it's worth checking the specific device's instructions on whether the filter should stay in place during wet cleaning.

A second situation involves renovation work. Gypsum and other very fine construction dust quickly clogs a regular vacuum's filter, reducing suction power. After larger renovations, plaster fragments and drilling debris also appear, requiring a more durable container.

In a workshop, tank capacity and hose durability matter more than compactness, since wood shavings and larger debris, including glass shards, are common — larger, sharper shards are best collected by hand with gloves first.

Car interiors and garages often contain a mix of sand, wet snow and small stones that don't suit a regular vacuum's attachments or tank. Caution is needed with fuel, oil or solvents, which should not be treated as ordinary water — manufacturer guidance should be followed.

In private homes, basements and terraces regularly accumulate sand, soil and damp debris, where a more versatile device can replace several separate tools.

Whether such a device is actually needed

In an apartment where the main challenge is crumbs, a good regular vacuum is enough. A wet-and-dry vacuum becomes useful for households with a garage, workshop, basement or outdoor area, or where renovations happen regularly. When choosing a model, suitable attachments, good filtration and easy tank emptying matter more than nominal power.
