Kaja Kallas offers condolences to Norway over death of King Harald V
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has offered condolences to Norway following the death of King Harald V. The monarch died on August 28 at the age of 89, after more than 35 years on the throne.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has expressed condolences to Norway over the death of King Harald V.
In a social media post, Kallas said she learned with deep sorrow of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V. She said her thoughts were first and foremost with the grieving nation, the royal family and the people of Norway.
According to Kallas, Harald was "truly a people's king" who spent his life defending freedom and Norway's open democratic society. She wished Norway strength in this difficult moment.
Decades on the throne
The monarch died on August 28 at the age of 89, having reigned for more than 35 years.
Following Harald V's death, the Norwegian throne automatically passed to his son, Crown Prince Haakon, who has become King Haakon VIII.
