Worker Assaults Former Municipal Manager at Kalēti Parish Meeting; Police Launch Criminal Investigation

On Wednesday, July 22, a violent incident occurred at a Kalēti parish residents' council meeting. Virginijs Karbauskis, a worker from the municipal Utility Department, assaulted Ģirts Laugalis, the head of the Rucava and Dunika union administration, who previously led the Bārta and Kalēti parish union administration.

The attack stemmed from Karbauskis' public accusations that Laugalis had taken municipal tools and machinery when he moved to his new position. During the meeting, Laugalis explained that all equipment remained in Kalēti. After providing clarifications, he left the meeting but encountered Karbauskis in the hallway, who acted aggressively and struck him. Laugalis later sought medical attention at a trauma center, where a rib fracture was diagnosed.

Laugalis filed a report with the State Police. Police representative Madara Šeršņova confirmed that at approximately 9:40 PM on July 22, police received information about bodily injuries during the meeting. A criminal investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances.

Meanwhile, Daiga Egle, acting head of the Bārta and Kalēti parish union administration, stated that an inventory conducted after the incident found all tools and machinery accounted for, with only two construction buckets missing. Some tools may be with a finishing master in another parish. Egle noted that Karbauskis was hospitalized after the incident and that she plans to discuss his anger outbursts with him once he recovers.
