Kallas hopes US envoys recognised Russia's unwillingness to make peace

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas has expressed hope that negotiators sent by US President Donald Trump were able to recognise that Russia is not genuinely interested in achieving peace.

According to Kallas, she hopes that US representatives, during their contacts with the Russian side, came away convinced that Moscow lacks real readiness to move toward ending the war.

Context

The remark comes against the backdrop of continued efforts by the US administration to broker a negotiated settlement to Russia's war against Ukraine. Several meetings have taken place between US officials and Russian representatives, but so far none have led to concrete progress toward a ceasefire or peace talks.

EU leadership, including Kallas, has repeatedly voiced scepticism about Russia's true intentions to end the fighting, arguing that Moscow's actions on the battlefield and in its political rhetoric contradict what is being stated in negotiations.
