Kallas condemns Houthi attack on Riyadh international airport

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas condemned the Yemeni Houthis' attack on Riyadh's airport in Saudi Arabia, which killed at least 12 people. EU foreign ministers will discuss rising tensions in the region on Monday.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has condemned an attack on the international airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, in which at least 12 people died. She spoke on behalf of the EU on social media. The incident bears on security in the Middle East, and EU foreign ministers are due to discuss it on Monday.

Kallas called the attack a monstrous act of terrorism and stressed that no circumstances can justify indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. She expressed the EU's solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, offered deepest condolences to the families of the dead and wished the injured a swift recovery. Kallas said she is in close contact with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

What the EU plans

On Monday, the foreign ministers of EU member states will discuss the escalating tensions in the region. According to Kallas, it is crucial to strengthen coordination between the EU's naval operation in the Red Sea, Aspides, and the multinational maritime security coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

Consequences of the attack

The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said on Sunday, 11 October, that at least 12 people were killed and 309 injured in the attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The source holds Yemen's Houthis responsible, saying they fired a missile at the facility.

Estonia's Foreign Ministry strongly advises against travel to Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region.
