Kalncempji residents raise everyday concerns with local council

Residents of Kalncempji, a village in Alūksne municipality near the border, met with local government representatives to discuss a range of issues affecting their daily lives.

Security and shelters

A central topic was security in the border area. Municipal executive director Ingus Berkulis acknowledged that Kalncempji currently lacks shelters meeting required standards. Given the village's location, residents stressed that knowing where to seek protection and how to act during a crisis is essential. Berkulis said the municipality is working with state institutions to assess possible solutions, but for now residents should rely on official state announcements and warning signals.

Roads and infrastructure

Road conditions and mobile network coverage were also widely discussed. Svetlana Prenka Mihailova, deputy head of the parish association administration, said road maintenance remains a top priority, citing recent surface improvements on the Cempji–Malaci road as an example of ongoing work.

Smaller but important matters

Residents also raised smaller, everyday concerns, including the need for a shelter over waste containers, worn-out library furniture, and the absence of a public restroom. Resident representative Anta Spilva noted that local initiatives often stall due to bureaucratic obstacles, urging municipal specialists to help residents refine project proposals submitted for participatory budgeting rather than rejecting them over minor technical issues. Berkulis pledged that the municipality would try to do more to help residents' ideas move toward implementation.
