Calvert-Lewin shines again as Leeds rout struggling Newcastle 4-1
Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored and set up another goal in a 4-1 win over Newcastle, fuelling talk of a possible England recall.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his habit of tormenting Newcastle United, scoring and providing an assist as Leeds United beat the Magpies 4-1 at Elland Road on Monday night. The 29-year-old has now scored eight times against the club he was once linked with, and he received a standing ovation from the home crowd when substituted late in the game.
Leeds supporters used the occasion to mock Newcastle's heavy summer spending, pointing out that it was a free transfer who caused the visitors the most trouble.
Praise from manager and pundits
Leeds boss Daniel Farke praised Calvert-Lewin's fitness, confidence and difficulty to defend against, calling him one of the best strikers in the Premier League on current form. Former England defender Jamie Carragher described the display as almost perfect, saying the striker was unplayable on the night.
England recall in sight?
Calvert-Lewin has scored three goals in his last four matches and is currently the leading English striker in the Premier League. He has been on England head coach Thomas Tuchel's radar in recent months, having earned a call-up in March, though he missed out on this year's World Cup squad. Tuchel is due to announce his squad on Friday for upcoming Nations League matches against Spain and the Czech Republic.
Calvert-Lewin also became only the second Leeds player, after Mark Viduka in 2003, to score in five consecutive Premier League home appearances.
Newcastle's troubles continue
Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, had been unbeaten in their opening five games of the season before this defeat, but collapsed at Elland Road, conceding three goals within a 14-minute spell in the first half. Jaissle admitted afterwards that his young side lacked the required intensity and physicality.
