Talks between the United States and Iran began in a Swiss resort near Lake Lucerne, aimed at achieving lasting peace. Vice President JD Vance called the meeting historic and voiced optimism that the two sides could restart relations. Vance, along with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. Qatar and Pakistan are mediating. Vance stated that President Trump wants to send a message to the Iranian people: if Iran's leadership abandons regional destabilization and nuclear ambitions, the US is ready to fundamentally transform ties. However, Trump simultaneously posted on Truth Social, threatening that Tehran must rein in Hezbollah in Lebanon, otherwise the US would launch new and heavier attacks. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope for productive discussions and a document promoting peace and prosperity. The Iranian delegation did not address journalists and declined to join group photos.
