Lux Optics, the developer of the Halide camera app, has released its first update adapting the software to Apple's foldable iPhone Duo. It is an early example of how third-party developers are adjusting their apps to the new device, whose two screens and new aspect ratios call for changes.

The question of app support

In Engadget's review of the iPhone Duo, app support was named as one of the big open questions. Apple's own apps may be ready for the dual screens and new aspect ratios from the start, but it was unclear how quickly other developers would embrace the hardware. In Halide's case, the answer is: very quickly.

According to the report, Halide was once reportedly a possible acquisition target for Apple. How the company has approached its design for the Duo is therefore an interesting example of developers finding creative ways to adapt to the hardware.

New features for three poses

Halide users on the iPhone Duo get additions designed for each of the foldable's three poses. The update includes several interface choices. One of the more notable is an option to move the camera controls when the device is fully or partially open.

In the partly open pose, the iPhone Duo can essentially work as a waist-level viewfinder camera.

Availability and what's next

The update is available now to Halide Mark III users. Lux Optics has indicated that further features focused on the iPhone Duo are in the works.
