Canada to impose tariffs on range of US goods starting September 8

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on a range of goods from the United States starting September 8. The decision follows three days of talks in Washington, where representatives of the two countries failed to reach a new trade agreement.

According to media outlet CBC, the new Canadian tariffs will affect several sectors, including dairy, metallurgy, home appliances, pulp and paper, and electronics.

Carney: a reluctant step

Carney stressed that his government is taking this step reluctantly. He explained that the measures will lead to higher prices and fewer choices for Canadian consumers. At the same time, he noted that many American companies and states are essentially innocent bystanders in a dispute they did not seek.

Carney said Canada and the United States are now effectively in a trade war.

US already imposed 50% tariffs

On the night of August 22, the United States imposed 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment. The measures took effect after the failed three-day negotiations in Washington.

According to estimates by the AFP news agency, the new US tariffs will affect 5.5% of Canada's total exports to its neighboring country.
