Canada reach last 16 with stoppage-time win over South Africa
Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Stephen Eustaquio, securing their first-ever spot in the World Cup round of 16.

In Los Angeles on Sunday, Canada beat South Africa 1-0 to advance to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in history. The match, which was the first of the round of 16, remained goalless until the second minute of stoppage time. Stephen Eustaquio chested down a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg and fired a first-time shot into the bottom-left corner. Canada, co-hosts of the tournament, played without star Alphonso Davies, who was recovering from a hamstring injury and came on as a substitute in the 75th minute. Davies made an immediate impact but could not score. Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4.
