Canada allocates nearly $640,000 in aid for Ukrainians affected by Russian captivity and occupation

Canada will allocate additional funding to support Ukrainians who suffered as a result of Russian captivity and occupation, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced. The sum totals 863,000 Canadian dollars, roughly equivalent to $640,000 USD.

The news was reported by Ukrinform, citing the minister's statement. Anand said the funds would go toward helping people persecuted because of Russia's war, including victims of conflict-related sexual violence.

Part of the money will also support Ukrainian non-governmental organizations working with returned civilians, prisoners of war, as well as children and their families.

Earlier funding for children's return

The minister recalled that earlier this month Canada had already allocated around 6 million Canadian dollars to help bring back Ukrainian children illegally taken to Russia. Those funds were meant to support reintegration, tracing and return of the children, as well as countering their indoctrination, militarization and recruitment.

Together, the two funding packages bring Canada's support — particularly for returning Ukrainian children home — to nearly $7 million.

As previously reported, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced earlier this month that the country would allocate 350 million Canadian dollars ($253 million USD) to purchase interceptor missiles for Ukraine's air defense.
