Village renamed from Kancersili to Muižkalni due to 'unwanted associations' with cancer
The village of Kancersili in Ogre region has been officially renamed to Muižkalni because its former name evoked unwanted associations with the English word 'cancer' for potential property buyers.

The Ogre County Council has decided to rename the village of Kancersili to Muižkalni, citing negative associations triggered by the name. The initiative was submitted by SIA 'Stila aģentūra', which owns most real estate in the settlement.
The company explained that the original name reminded many potential buyers of the English word 'cancer'. The proposed alternative, 'Muižkalni', is of Latvian origin and better aligns with local naming traditions. The State Language Center issued a positive opinion on the change on May 14.
Although the advisory board of Tīnūži parish opposed the renaming, arguing that Kancersili is part of history, the municipality stressed that the village was only created in 2005 by subdividing the 'Lielkancersili' property. Therefore, changing the name would not affect cultural heritage. A survey of landowners showed 98% support for the new name.
The decision has taken effect, and the village is now officially called Muižkalni.
