American rapper Kanye West has earned a substantial sum this summer from concerts he never actually performed, British outlet The Sun reports. In total, the figure is estimated at around £18.7 million.

The arrangement stems from the artist's reported business practice of agreeing to perform only on the condition that part of his fee is paid in advance, before the event even takes place.

Russia shows

One case involves planned performances in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Although the concerts ultimately did not take place, West reportedly kept around £7.3 million of the money already transferred to him.

Wireless festival also cancelled

A similar scenario played out with London's Wireless festival, where the rapper had been announced as one of the headline acts. That event was also cancelled, but media reports indicate West had already received roughly £5.5 million for it.

The artist reportedly gained even more from concerts planned in France and Italy that likewise failed to take place. According to reports, he received about £2.9 million for those shows.

Industry criticism

Several industry figures have criticized the practice, warning that repeatedly cancelled concerts could harm West's reputation and make future cooperation with event organizers more difficult.
