Why Apple AirPods batteries drain fast and how to make them last longer
Tech site Engadget explains why the battery in Apple's AirPods wireless earbuds can run down quickly and lists steps that may extend it. These include cleaning contacts, resetting the earbuds and using optimized charging.

Battery longevity is one of the biggest challenges for makers of wireless earbuds, and Apple is no exception. The technology site Engadget has outlined why the battery in Apple's AirPods may drain quickly and what owners can do about it.
Why the battery wears down
The lithium-ion batteries used in AirPods typically last roughly 300 to 500 charge cycles before capacity drops significantly, which equals about two to three years. If your pair has not reached that stage, compare its performance with Apple's rated battery life for your model. For example, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation (ANC) are rated at four hours of listening with ANC on and five hours with it off.
Earbuds keep using power outside the case while they are connected to a device or searching for one, so it helps to return them to the case after use. The case battery also wears out over time. The more features are active, the greater the drain, and Spatial Audio is among those that use energy.
What to do
First, make sure the earbuds are actually charging. Dust or earwax can block the small contact points in the case, so the circuit does not close. With the buds in the case, check each one's charge level on an iPhone. Uneven readings, such as 22 percent and 65 percent, point to blocked contacts.
Clean the earbuds occasionally with a lint-free cloth, and do not scrape the delicate contacts with hard objects. Apple says the case can be wiped with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, kept away from the charging ports and fully dried before charging. It also suggests a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in micellar water, especially for the meshes, followed by a distilled-water rinse.
A reset is another option. Put the AirPods in the case, go to Settings > Bluetooth > More Info > Forget This Device, and follow Apple's instructions for your model. Then reconnect them as new.
Why they die even from 100 percent
The percentage shows how full the battery is, not how healthy it is. Rechargeable batteries age, so an older pair delivers less listening time. Turning off ANC in a quiet setting or disabling Spatial Audio saves power, but only a little; on very old models, switching off Spatial Audio may add about 30 minutes.
For new AirPods, enable Optimized Battery Charging under Settings > Your AirPods > Battery. The earbuds then learn your routine and spend less time fully charged. Newer models also offer Charging Notifications for low-battery alerts.
If nothing helps, contact Apple. With AppleCare+ coverage, battery service is free when the battery holds under 80 percent of its original capacity.
