Why Apple's Mac Studio has become so much more expensive

Apple's latest Mac Studio, powered by the M5 Max or M5 Ultra chip, has become the company's only device capable of running AI models locally or handling high-end film visual effects work. But since the previous model launched 18 months ago, the base price of the M5 Max has risen by $500 to $2,500, while the M5 Ultra now starts at $5,500 — $1,500 more than the M3 Ultra. That's a far bigger jump than Apple's typical yearly price changes.

Who it's for

The Mac Studio targets users who need more than the Mac Mini can offer, with a more powerful processor, greater memory, and wider memory bandwidth. The M5 Max configuration is suited to running large language models and editing 8K video, while the M5 Ultra targets heavy AI users who need to store massive datasets in local memory and run models with hundreds of billions of parameters. The top configuration, with 256GB of memory and 2TB of storage, costs $11,299 — $3,800 more than a similarly equipped M3 Ultra model.

What's driving the price hike

The main cause is soaring prices for high-end memory and storage. Apple uses fast LPDDR5X memory mounted directly onto the processor package. Where the company reportedly paid around $6 per gigabyte for this memory earlier this year, the price may now be closer to $10 or $11. NAND storage prices have roughly doubled as well. Altogether, rising component costs could account for roughly $2,400 to $2,600 of the price increase — but the actual jump is nearly $4,000, suggesting Apple may also be boosting profit margins or hedging against further cost increases ahead.

Apple has reportedly agreed to pay 30 to 40 percent more for memory and storage next year, meaning prices are unlikely to come down anytime soon.
