Why body odor changes with age and what dermatologists say about it

Aging changes the composition of skin lipids, which can produce a distinctive body odor that is not necessarily linked to hygiene. Dermatologists mention persimmon extract as a possible aid, but scientific proof is lacking.

A person's body odor can change with age, and the cause is biological rather than necessarily poor hygiene. This is reported by “Real Simple”, citing dermatologists. One possible aid for reducing the odor is persimmon extract, which is included in some body care products.

Why the smell changes

As people age, the body undergoes various changes, including in skin lipids, or fats. When these oxidize and break down, a compound called 2-nonenal can form, which is associated with a distinctive, slightly musty odor.

Dermatologist Sherine Idris stresses that this results from natural biological processes. Even people who wash regularly may notice that their scent becomes different over the years.

The role of persimmon

Persimmon contains tannins, plant compounds that may help neutralize substances linked to unpleasant smells. For this reason, some manufacturers offer soaps, shower gels and deodorants containing persimmon extract. They can be added to a usual washing routine, paying particular attention to areas where the odor lingers longer: the back of the neck, behind the ears and the underarms.

However, effectiveness may vary depending on a product's formulation and use. Consumer reviews of individual products are positive, but they are not sufficient scientific proof that the products will work for everyone.

Do hygiene habits need changing?

Not necessarily. A change in odor with age does not automatically mean a person washes too rarely. Regular, gentle washing, clean clothing and products suited to skin care may help.

If body odor changes suddenly, becomes unusually strong or comes with other symptoms, it is advisable to see a doctor, since there may be other causes.
