Bluetooth multipoint is a feature that lets headphones stay connected to multiple devices at once, making switching between them much easier. Though it's not part of the official Bluetooth standard, it's worth testing before you buy.

Why multipoint matters
Wireless headphones have become a staple, with the market expanding steadily each year. While marketing often highlights features like active noise cancellation, there is another capability that deserves attention: Bluetooth multipoint. It allows a single pair of headphones to maintain connections to multiple devices at once, letting you switch between audio streams without constantly diving into settings menus.
In the era of the headphone jack, switching between sources was as simple as moving a cable. Bluetooth, however, introduced a more cumbersome process, and despite years of updates, connection glitches remain common. Multipoint solves much of this friction by letting your headphones stay linked to, say, a laptop and a smartphone simultaneously. When a call comes in while you're listening to music, the headphones automatically favor the call.
How it works and its limits
Multipoint relies on Bluetooth profiles. Music uses A2DP, while volume controls use AVRCP. Phone calls switch to HFP, a lower-quality bidirectional profile. This means a Zoom meeting on your laptop might keep priority over an incoming call, depending on how the feature is implemented. The technology is not part of the official Bluetooth specification; manufacturers build it on top of the existing stack. That's why it's not universal, even though consumers want it. Also, multipoint can't combine audio from two sources at once—it simply picks which stream to play, often pausing the other.
There can be quirks. For instance, scrolling through social media on your phone while a podcast plays on your computer may cause the headphones to switch to the phone's autoplaying video, even if the phone's volume is muted. Notification sounds can also interrupt. Apple and Samsung take a different approach, offering a modified version of multipoint that works exclusively with their own devices. Because they control the entire ecosystem, switching is often smoother, whereas companies like Sony or Bose lack that integration.
Before buying, it's wise to test multipoint with your specific devices to ensure it behaves as expected.
