Why IMAX film cameras are so notoriously loud
Traditional IMAX 15/70 film cameras produce a constant mechanical whine because of the huge volume of film they move and the vacuum system needed to keep each frame flat. That noise is one reason true IMAX filmmaking remains rare today.
Shooting with a genuine IMAX 15/70 film camera is expensive, bulky and slow — and on top of that, the cameras are extremely loud, producing a steady mechanical whine whenever they roll.
Why the camera is so loud
A standard film camera advances 24 frames per second, holding each one still for exposure. IMAX cameras move far more film: in the 15/70 format, each frame on a 70mm print spans 15 sprocket holes instead of the five used by a conventional 65mm camera, producing an image roughly three times larger. That means the camera pulls through 5.6 feet of film every second, or 336 feet a minute — a 1,000-foot magazine lasts only about three minutes. Moving that much film requires a powerful motor, and the motor, magazine and shutter mechanisms together generate significant mechanical noise.
The vacuum system adds a constant hum
Each frame must sit perfectly flat behind the lens, since film can retain a curl after being wound in a magazine. To prevent this, IMAX cameras use a vacuum plate that sucks the film flat against a stable surface during exposure. Running that suction continuously produces a high-pitched mechanical hum, and if the suction fails, the film can bend and ruin the shot.
How filmmakers work around it
The noise is a key reason most films today are shot digitally, and IMAX-certified digital cameras — used for movies advertised as "Filmed for IMAX" — avoid the problem entirely since there's no mechanical film transport. For productions still using traditional film cameras, padded covers called "barneys" and soundproof enclosures called "blimps" can dampen the noise, though a blimped camera can weigh up to 275 pounds. Spoiled dialogue is often re-recorded later using ADR. IMAX has also built a newer, quieter camera called the Keighley, used on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, though the full rig still reportedly weighs over 300 pounds.
