Why clearing your cache won't always speed up your devices
Deleting cached data is a common troubleshooting habit for slow devices, but it only helps when the stored data itself is causing the problem. Otherwise, it can temporarily slow things down instead of speeding them up.

Clearing cached data has become a go-to fix whenever a phone, computer or streaming device seems sluggish. But as Engadget explains, cached information isn't inherently harmful to performance — quite the opposite. A cache exists precisely so software doesn't have to redownload or rebuild the same information every time it's needed.
What caching actually does
Browsers store copies of images and other webpage elements so repeat visits load faster. Apps work similarly: a music streaming app might cache frequently played playlists, while a social media app keeps recently viewed profile pictures and thumbnails ready. A large cache isn't automatically a sign of trouble — often it just means the system is doing its job. Browser caches, individual app caches and system-level caches also serve different purposes and aren't cleared in the same way.
When clearing can backfire
Deleting cached data removes the shortcut it provides, forcing apps and the operating system to retrieve or rebuild what was removed. Google's own guidance for Chrome warns that some websites may load slower right after clearing cache, since heavy content like images has to reload. A similar caveat applies to Android apps, which can run slower the next time they're opened after their cache is cleared.
When clearing actually helps
If stored data is itself the source of a problem — for example, a corrupted cached video that won't play properly — clearing the cache can fix it. It can also free up storage, though that's a separate benefit from improving speed, and any space gained tends to be reclaimed by the cache again before long. Sony, for instance, recommends clearing the PS5's system cache through safe mode specifically for certain system issues or performance drops, not as routine upkeep.
Cache, cookies and app data aren't interchangeable
Chrome separates cached files from cookies and browsing history; cookies preserve sign-ins and site preferences, so clearing them affects how websites remember you more than clearing cache alone does. Android distinguishes "Clear cache," which removes temporary data, from "Clear storage," which permanently erases all app data. Safari's "Clear History and Website Data" option, by contrast, removes history, cache and cookies together. Because of these differences, it's worth checking exactly which categories are selected before tapping delete.
