Why Chinese smartwatches like the Oppo Watch X3 are rarely sold in the US

The Oppo Watch X3 is a capable Wear OS smartwatch, but its absence from the US market stems from Oppo's lack of a consumer hardware business in the country, not from the device itself.

The Oppo Watch X3 is a solid Wear OS smartwatch with long battery life, durable build, and fast performance – it could easily compete with the Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch. Yet US consumers cannot buy it through official channels. The obstacle is not technical but commercial: Oppo has no official consumer hardware business in the United States. Its phones, tablets, and wearables are not sold there, and the Watch X3 is no exception.

Selling connected devices in the US requires more than just an online store. Companies need distribution, regulatory compliance, warranty service, and software support. For cellular models, carrier partnerships are essential. If Oppo is unwilling to build that infrastructure for its phones, it is not going to do it for a niche smartwatch. There is also overlap with sister brand OnePlus: the Oppo Watch X3 is essentially the same device as the OnePlus Watch 4, and OnePlus recently pulled out of the US and Europe. It is unlikely Oppo would re-enter with the same product under a different name.

Competition is another barrier. The North American smartwatch market is dominated by the Apple Watch, leaving a small share for Samsung, Google, Garmin, and others. A new entrant would need a massive marketing push to gain even a tiny foothold – something OnePlus already failed to achieve. Political factors also play a role. Huawei is a clear example: in 2022, the FCC blocked new approvals for companies on its “Covered List.” Although Oppo has not faced a similar ban, any Chinese tech company eyeing the US market must worry about potential restrictive regulations.

For dedicated buyers, importing remains an option. The global version of the Oppo Watch X3 is available on eBay or AliExpress from reputable sellers. However, trade-offs exist: the global version lacks eSIM, so connectivity is limited to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Imported devices also typically do not offer easy returns, local support, or guaranteed long-term software updates.

In short, launching the Watch X3 in the US would be expensive and risky. The hardware is ready, but Oppo’s business is not. Those willing to accept compromises can still purchase it via import channels.
