Why is it harder to sell a used car in Latvia? The answer lies in pricing and supply

A social media post questioning why used cars are hard to sell in Latvia sparked discussion online. Market data suggests the real cause is neither mass wealth nor poverty, but rising supply and pickier buyers.

A driver on the social network Threads recently expressed frustration at being unable to sell his car, joking that Latvians must have either become so wealthy they only buy new vehicles, or so short on cash they can no longer afford even a used one.

Commenters offered a third explanation: used cars can still be sold, but only at realistic prices. Sellers often overvalue their vehicles based on money spent on repairs and upkeep, while buyers focus on different factors — the car's age, mileage, condition, and what else is available for the same money.

Supply keeps growing

In July 2026, Latvia's used car market listed more than 55,000 vehicles, with supply having grown significantly over the month. This means sellers must compete not just with nearby listings but with thousands of other cars on offer.

Are buyers really switching to new cars?

While new passenger car registrations rose by nearly 30% in the first half of 2025, overall used car registrations stayed close to the previous year's level. This suggests there is no mass shift toward buying only new vehicles.

Dealer advantages and changing technology preferences

Some buyers prefer purchasing from dealers, who offer consumer protection guarantees, financing options, and the ability to trade in an old car as a down payment.

Technology preferences are also shifting: in the first half of 2025, used diesel car registrations fell by 13.3%, petrol car registrations rose by 28%, and used electric car registrations jumped by nearly 136%.

The takeaway is that buyers haven't disappeared from the market — they have simply become more selective and more careful about comparing prices given the wide range of options available.
